The new school year is fast approaching. And for parents who already know there isn't enough time in the day, it can be an especially hectic time. But don't worry, here at UBMD we're your one source - even for this time of year. Dennis Kuo, MD, MHS has just the tips to start the school year off right.

Bedtimes

Start adjusting them now. High schoolers need about 8-10 hours of sleep and elementary students about 10-12 hours. It takes about two weeks to adjust to a new sleep schedule.

Breakfast

Make sure whether it's at home or school that protein is part of the meal.

Backpacks

It's recommended that backpacks weigh no more than 20% of the child's body weight. For example, if a child weighs 40 pounds, the backpack should weigh no more than 8 pounds.
