UBMD Internal Medicine

Professional Summary:

I care for patients with a broad range of renal disorders, including acute and chronic kidney diseases, end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or transplantation, glomerular disorders, polycystic disease, electrolyte disorders and resistant hypertension. I have a subspecialized interest in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis. I work with a team of health care professionals to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of treatment plans for my patients. Once a treatment plan is selected, I help patients and their families understand the risk factors and complications that may be part of treatment and, if complications arise, how to handle them.

My clinical responsibilities are primarily centered at the Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) where I care for both inpatients and outpatients. I care for inpatients as an attending physician on the inpatient nephrology service and nephrology consultation services. I see outpatients through the UBMD Nephrology Clinic and the Dialysis Unit. I also serve as the director for home dialysis services at ECMC, and in this role I strive to ensure that patients who perform dialysis at home receive the highest quality care to achieve optimal outcomes.

I participate in clinical trials related to dialysis where I enroll patients eligible for the treatment protocols. My clinical research interests include cardiac disease risk factors and outcomes in peritoneal and hemodialysis patients.

As the program director for the Nephrology Fellowship Program, I oversee and develop the clinical and didactic curriculum for fellows who are training to become nephrologists. I am also actively involved in the education of medical students and internal medicine residents.
