“If one child is not sleeping well, or barely sleeping at all, the entire family’s sleep is disturbed ... It can have an awful consequence for the whole family and lead to other health concerns. ”
Amanda Hassinger, MD, MS, Pediatric Sleep Medicine Physician
Associate Professor

The webinar, Sleep for School Success: Back-to-school sleep tips and COVID-19’s impact on sleep for school-children, will be presented by Amanda Hassinger, MD, MS and Alberto Monegro, MD, both members of the Division of Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine at UBMD Pediatrics.

During the presentation, they will share the latest sleep recommendations for different age groups, how to help transition kids to a new bedtime routine and discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sleep of school-aged children.

As a foundation of health, sleep affects every aspect of life. For children preparing to go back to school, getting the right amount of sleep can be a struggle – and a challenge for parents trying to get the kids off to bed earlier.

“As an essential building block for children’s mental and physical health, insufficient sleep can lead to irritability and lack of focus, as well as learning and behavioral problems,” said Hassinger, a board-certified pediatric sleep medicine physician with UBMD Pediatrics and associate professor at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Through the webinar, Hassinger and Monegro hope to help Western New York families increase the amount of sleep they get, reduce stress through sleep and new sleep habits, improve focus and attention span of children and even help with behavioral concerns.

Hassinger, a mother of three, personally knows the toll sleep interruptions can have on not only the children but the family overall.

“If one child is not sleeping well, or barely sleeping at all, the entire family’s sleep is disturbed,” Hassinger said. “It can have an awful consequence for the whole family and lead to other health concerns.”

Resolving sleep concerns or getting to identify them early can make a huge difference for children, especially as the school year gets underway.

“Prolonged sleep issues could indicate an underlying physical or emotional concern that needs additional evaluation,” said Monegro, a board-certified sleep medicine physician with both UBMD Internal Medicine and UBMD Pediatrics, as well as an assistant professor at the Jacobs School.

According to Hassinger, the webinar will help advance the pillars the Division of Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine are built on: providing education and support for families, while maximizing wellness and quality of life.

Both physicians run the UBMD Pediatrics Sleep Medicine Center and Lab, which recently received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), making it Western New York’s only pediatric-dedicated sleep center with this accreditation.
