Pediatric infectious diseases, viral infections, antibody responses against HIV, Kawasaki disease
Mark Daniel Hicar is a pediatric infectious disease specialist.
He can speak to media about general pediatric infectious disease topics including viral infections such as measles, influenza and adenovirus, as well as rare diseases that result from viruses, such as acute flaccid myelitis. As a practicing physician, he has treated two cases of that rare disease.
Hicar’s research is on immunity, focusing on B cell and antibody responses. Research interests include using antibodies to identify the cause of Kawasaki disease, the most common form of acquired heart disease in children, and improving vaccine strategies for HIV through studying antibody responses seen in rare individuals who are infected with HIV but do not need therapy to control the disease.
