Katie received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan and her Medical Degree from the State University of Upstate Medical University at Syracuse, NY. She completed her General Pediatric Residency at the University of Wisconsin and her Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. She is Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
During fellowship, her research lead to the development of a Noninvasive Prenatal Test for Beta-Hemoglobinopathies. After completing her training in the Bay Area, she moved to Seattle, WA where she worked at Seattle Children's Hospital and the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic for five years. There she cared for and learned from patients and families living with Sickle Cell Anemia and Thalassemia. Expanding these specific programs dovetailed with her role as co-chair of the Blood Usage Committee where she worked closely with the Transfusion Medicine service to ensure dissemination and implementation of best practices and guidelines for transfusion support, engage staff in blood-sparing initiatives, continuously review transfusion metrics, guide decisions around inventory changes, and help navigate shortages.
