I am a psychiatrist specializing in pain medicine, addiction medicine and psychosomatic medicine. My areas of expertise focus on the comorbidity of medical and psychiatric illness and the comorbidity of, and concurrent treatment strategies for, psychiatric illness and chronic pain conditions. Some of my research has focused on describing the psychosocial factors influencing healthcare utilization of chronic pain conditions. I have worked extensively in pain medicine education and have developed pain medicine training modules and didactics for incorporation into psychiatry residency curricula. As part of a broader endeavor to reduce suicide risk, I have refined strategies to improve referral for ongoing psychiatric and chemical dependency-based treatment for individuals evaluated on the psychiatric consultation service presenting to the hospital with concerns related to suicide attempts and suicidal ideation. This year, I have been working to develop non-invasive treatment strategies (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation clinic) to improve the care of patients with refractory depression. It is hoped that this can be expanded to develop treatment protocols for individuals suffering from other psychiatric conditions (e.g., Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), depression with comorbid anxiety, as well as pain disorders.
