Sleep apnea can come in different forms:
Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder that primarily affects teenage males. It results in intermittent episodes of lengthy sleep - in some cases up to 20 hours at a time. Behavioral symptoms, such as irritability, confusion, hallucinations, increased appetite, and increased libido can occur as well.
The circadian rhythm is the natural progression of sleepiness and wakefulness over a full day. This generally follows the day-night cycle, and your body bases a lot of its functions around this timeline.
Sleep-wake disorders revolve around the inability to go to sleep or wake up at desired or socially acceptable times. A normal example of this is jet lag, when crossing multiple time zones quickly will disrupt your usual sleep schedule, but after a few days it typically returns to normal. Someone with a sleep-wake disorder will experience disruptions similar to jet lag more often to the point where it interferes with daily life.

After your first visit, or if you are already a patient with us, our physicians may recommend that your child undergoes a sleep study. A sleep study is a dedicated test to diagnose sleep disorders. One of our licensed sleep technicians will monitor your child's heart rate, blood oxygen levels, breathing patterns and more. Once completed, the sleep medicine team will review and assess the data to tailor treatment to help your child get normal, restful sleep.
